What Causes a Blocked Toilet?

The most common cause is wet wipes marketed as "flushable" — they don't break down in the drain the way toilet paper does, and they accumulate into a mass that anchors fat and debris. Sanitary products and nappies cause complete blockages and require physical removal rather than jetting alone. Excessive toilet paper build-up is a particular problem in older, narrower clay soil pipes under Coventry's terraced properties, where the bore is smaller than modern plastic pipework.

Fat and cooking residue can also migrate from the kitchen waste stack into the soil stack, coating the pipe walls and narrowing the bore over time. In student and HMO properties, a wider variety of objects find their way into toilet drains — objects that have no business going down a toilet at all.

How We Clear a Blocked Toilet

We start with drain rods to break up and physically remove the obstruction. Where the blockage is further down the soil stack or branch drain, we use high-pressure jetting to clear the line completely rather than simply pushing the blockage further along. Jetting also removes the fat coating and debris left on pipe walls, which reduces the chance of a recurrence.

If the toilet has blocked more than once in a short period, or the blockage doesn't clear with rodding and jetting, we carry out a CCTV drain inspection to check whether there is a structural issue in the pipework — particularly relevant in older clay soil stacks that may have cracked joints or a partial collapse.

HMOs and Multi-Occupancy Properties

Properties with multiple tenants — including the student lets close to Coventry University in the city centre and those near the University of Warwick in Canley and Tile Hill — put significantly higher usage on pipework. Shared soil stacks serving four, five or six occupants were often not designed for that level of use, and the clay pipework beneath older terraces is already showing its age.

For these properties, repeated blockages are a sign that the pipes need jetting rather than just rodding. Periodic maintenance jetting is worth considering for landlords with multiple tenants, as it costs considerably less than an emergency callout when the toilet has backed up into the hallway.

When a Blocked Toilet Signals Something More Serious

If the toilet keeps blocking despite clearing, or if you notice water backing up into the bath when you flush, the problem may be structural rather than a simple obstruction. Root intrusion into clay soil pipes is common under Coventry's older terrace stock, and a partial collapse — invisible without a camera — can catch debris repeatedly even after the pipe has been rodded clear. A same-day CCTV survey will identify whether there's a structural problem that needs repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you clear a blocked toilet the same day?
In most cases, yes. Call us and we'll give you an honest arrival estimate. For genuine emergencies we prioritise.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. You pay only for the work carried out, and we quote before starting.
The toilet is overflowing — what should I do now?
Turn off the water supply at the isolation valve behind or below the cistern, put towels down to contain water, and call us. Don't flush again.
Why does my toilet keep blocking after it's been cleared?
Recurring blockages usually mean either the blockage wasn't fully cleared, there's a partial structural problem in the pipe, or the soil pipe has a section of reduced bore. A CCTV survey will show which.
